
University of Dental Medicine was first established as College of Dental Medicine in Myanmar inthe year 1964.
The main responsibility of the College was to produce basic dental surgeons who can efficiently provide dental treatment for Myanmar people. In addition it was also responsible for dental auxiliary programmes such as dental nurse school and dental technician school. College of Dental Medicine became a full-fledged University in 2003 with a new campus in Than Thu Mar Road, Thingangyun Township, Yangon since 1997. The aims and objectives of the University reflect the oral and dental needs of Myanmar people and the contents of the curricula include the components of primary health care and the concept of community dentistry. It also includes clinical problem solving skills, behavioral science and personal and professional development programme. The curriculum is updated and modified to fulfill the requirements recommended by medical education seminars and to reflect the changing country needs.
A new 3-storey main building and 50 bedded Oral and Maxillo-facial teaching Hospital was inaugurated on 28 th November, 2005. Faculty members of the respective disciplines are involved not only in undergraduate teaching but also in postgraduate training such as Diploma in General Dental Practice and Master of Dental Science since 1993. With the permission of Ministry of Health, Doctoral courses were conducted since 2002. Moreover, Post Graduate Diploma Course in Dental Implantology is going to be conducted in 2020 academic year by the enforcement of Ministry of Health and Sports.
Quality assurance of medical education is a prerequisite for good quality care and better patient satisfaction. As you all know that our country is striving to achieve all round development of the nation within the context of political, administrative and socio-economic reformed conducted by Democratic government. In escalating interconnectivity and internationalization of higher education institutions, quality assurance is prerequisite for improvement in quality of service, maintaining standard, customer satisfaction, accountability to stakeholders, improving employee prestige, morale and credibility.
As our motto is “Dentists: Competency and Community-oriented”, we are trying to developtechnically competent and socially accountable international level dentists who support and improve the well-being of the citizens. After thorough discussion, the representatives from dental institutions and dental practitioners of the ASEAN members stated “The Bangkok Declaration 2015” on 22 nd May at ASEAN Dental Forum which was held at the Faculty of Dentistry of Chulalongkorm University, Thailand. As ASEAN Accreditation and free flow of dentists within
ASEAN countries is going to be established in near future, Quality Assurance Framework from Local, National to International in accord with the guidelines of Asian Universities Network (AUN) should be prepared.
After celebrating 13 th IDCMR congress as host in Myanmar, Deans from dental schools of ASEAN region plus two agreed to enhance academic collaboration and to combat long-term challenge of oral health improvement due to poverty and inequity.
